1). Is it possible to perceive others without, in some way, judging or categorizing them? If so, how? If not, how can we make the judgments we do make, more fair?
As horrible as this sounds, I do not think it is possible to perceive others without judging them in some way. Just as I was saying on Paris’ blog…first impressions are everything. We live in such a stereotypical world that focuses and relies so much on first impressions and we judge them instantaneously as if it was normal to us. I see someone walk into my office, and I automatically have an opinion about him or her. I know that shouldn’t be that way but the world that we grow up in has caused us to think about others either positively or negatively—which is how first impressions and judging start. We live in such a judgemental world!

I don't think that sounds horrible and I totally agree with you. Perceiving is judging, and judging someone doesn't always mean you are judging them negatively. I think it's practically impossible to meet someone and have no immediate thoughts about them. I think what we all should try to do is make our judgments positive ones. We should only be allowed to think happy positive thoughts :)
ReplyDeleteI thought that this topic was a little tricky, because while I understand that it is extremely hard to perceive others without judging, I do think that it is possible. I think that the more removed we can get from a situation the more objective we become and the less we judge. For example, if you are meeting your boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend, it's a relationship that’s very close to and I think it would be impossible to not judge and asses - whether it's positive or negative. However, for scientists and researchers who study old ancient cultures, they are very removed from the situation and can objectively look at it and learn while remaining objective.
ReplyDeleteHi Goober! You mentioned first impressions of when people walk into your office. Have you ever been wrong about the first impression judgment you have made? If so, how did your opinion change? Do you think it is possible to put those first impressions aside? :)
ReplyDeleteI think it is not that horrible that tend not to percive others without judging them. Sometimes it can be a positive thing. It seems sometimes that the least judgmental people can be too trusting or naive. Yet, it is important to keep an open mind about people. But, my life experiences as allowed me understnd people and how honest they are acting toward others.
ReplyDeleteYour right though first impressions are really hard to avoid. Usually our first impressions are not always correct but we cant help having them.
