3). Pick one concept from the assigned readings, other than what has already been discussed this week, that you found useful or interesting and discuss it.
One concept that I have found interesting in this week's reading is person protoypes. Person protypes are "idealized reprsentations of a certain kind of person" (Trenholm, 51). I find this interesting because it reminds me of stereotypes. However, it's different because rather than stereotyping as a whole, we focus on one person. The book shares examples of person protoypes...car salesman, professor, etc. Categorizing people into different categories is interesting and fun at the same time and in my opinion, we do it during first impressions. The book uses a ditzy girl as an example and that reminds me of my high school years where a teacher of mine yelled at a fellow student once because of an incident that doesn't even matters and automatically this teacher is considered rude and obnoxious regardless of the attitude he gives.

I agree with you, prototypes are very interesting. I think one thing that makes it so interesting to me is because a lot of them come from first impressions. For example when you are taking a class with a professor for the first time you are always watching the door and looking for who the professor is. You look for "professor" type qualities, such as a rolling bag, a cup of coffee, and usually older then the students.
ReplyDeleteWhen I am at a makeup store and want help I look for the girls with the best looking makeup, because I figure they have to work there. Some times I am wrong though and look like an idiot by asking a customer for mascara.
great blog!

Hi Goober,
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, thank you for your comments to my post this week. I found your post to question #2 interesting. A person prototype as Trenholm describes a car salesman, a professor, etc. I have a hilarious example to share with you about a person prototype. I got a call from our Legal department from a gal named Janice Nguyen. After, speaking with her over the phone, I needed to pick up several legal documents from her. I asked where she sat and told her I would be right up. I walk up to her area, I am in this area of 8 cubicles, but I do not see her name plate. So, I walked around again looking for a Vietnamese women…Janice Nguyen. All I saw in front of me was a Black women. I stopped and asked, “Excuse me could tell me where I could find Janice Nguyen?” She said, “That’s me!” We both just burst out in laughter for a few seconds. She said, “Oh I get this all the time.” I told, her so do I. With a last name as Smith, people are expecting a blonde hair, blue eyed-gal and they get me an Asian. To this day, when we see each other in the hallway, we chuckle and say “hi.”
