1). Consider the social constructionist perspective. How do we “build worlds” through communication? Think of some ideas we talk about in our culture that may not exist in other cultures. How do these concepts contribute to our happiness or success (of the lack of these) in our culture?
I think the social construtionist perspective is amazing because we are able to build worlds through knowledge and cultures. We build worlds through communication by combining our own cultures with the current culture and traditions we are living and we build off of them. In my opinion, these concepts contribue to our happiness by allowing us to combine both the present and past with our future. We are able to contribue to our own future by giving ourselves presents from the past. For example, when my parents moved from the Philippines, they were able to bring over family traditions such as special Christmas traditions that we do not have here in America...my parents combine both a Filipino Christmas with an American Christmas because they believe that it the way to bring up their children--a world full of happiness and a world full of traditions from the past, present, and future...That is where I believe both happiness and success come from--our cultural views and the way we uphold them to our current families.

Hi,
ReplyDeleteI like your answer to the post. I also think the social constructionist perspective is quite interesting. The main reasoning I have found for liking it is that I feel it is very broad. If you do not like the way something is working than you have the freedom to change it or incorporate new ideas into it. I used an example of a rescue group I used to work with and how I found them to be quite dated in their approach to adopt out animals. Due to this I eventually separated from the group and took back my original way of thinking, by modifying what ideas they had.

I like the part in your post where you comment on how the idea of building worlds through communication contributes to the happiness of our society. I think that this is definitely true because communication is such an important part of our ability to create relationships, either inside our cultural group or even outside of it. Being able to continually move forward as a society and constantly improve on ideas and concepts is necessary to the stability and growth of a society. The social constructionist perspective focuses on how the past affects the present and how what happens now will affect the future. It reminds us that to create a good future, we need to learn from the past and set a good example now.

I really like when you said, "We build worlds through communication by combining our own cultures with the current culture and traditions we are living and we build off of them." The world today is a very far world from what it was 20-30 years ago. We have fully entered globalization, and that is why it is very crucial that we develop the skills of communication.
ReplyDeleteIn addition to that, we have to learn how to effectively communicate with people from different backgrounds that came from different cultures.
I always compare the concept of being "humble" with yourself and others. In Japanese culture in particular, younger generation is very kind to elders and also humble with their accomplishments and life itself. In United States, while not everybody, most of the younger generation approaches life in a very selfish way. The focus is always "me" and how I can get "me" there, instead of looking out for other people and how they can advance as well.
It's just one of the many cultural aspects that people across the world can find common ground, which in turn will then improve the world and life on it.
I really enjoyed reading your post. Especially the part about growing happiness by taking our past and present and making a future. Especially living in California we are all surrounded by so many different cultures and together blending all these create a very diverse area. We have already and will continue to build a strong cultural diverse area as we learn from each other take our strengths and grow.
